The penultimate day!

We left Sainte Marine wishing that we didn't have to go home! How nice it would be to do the whole trip in reverse but spending more time at Rocamadour on the route.

But back to reality - we were heading for home.

Today we planned a gentle ride to Chateau du Kerjan near to Saint Pol Du Léon. The chateau was a nice building with a history dating back to the 1500s.

Whilst waiting for Nia, Anne and I sat in the chateau cafe in bright sunshine drinking tea and coffee - it was idyllic.

Riding into Saint Pol du Léon was interesting as the roads were shut due to a street market. The barriers had big no entry signs on but also had a small sign allowing access to the hotel we were staying in. So......... we rode the bikes up onto the pavements to avoid the barriers and on to the hotel.

The town was busy and the market was tacky - including the Peruvian pipe blowers and 'as seen on TV' stalls. Nia bought a novel in French.

The town also boasts 2 huge churches - one of which we popped into for a nose before finding a restaurant for our last supper.

So tomorrow it's leaving the hotel at about 7.30am for the short ride to Roscoff for the Ferry.

Au revoir Sainte Marine

We are now enroute to Sainte Pol Sur Léon in preparation for our ferry back to the UK tomorrow.

Yesterday the weather looked promising, so we went for a ride to Pointe du Raz in west Brittany. This place is great - beautiful in fact, with a very interesting history, especially in WW2.

The occupying German forces used the Pointe du Raz as a radar station and the remnants if the station are still visible today.

The Pointe really is stunning....

The journey back was interesting as we set off in sunlight but all of a sudden got caught up in a huge rainstorm - we got soaked - even down to the undies!!!

No sooner as the storm started it had dried up and the sun was blazing again. So in essence, our kit had had a rapid wash and for the rest of the journey, was getting blow-dried. Fab!

Our last evening was spent in a crépiere in Sainte Marine with a lovely view if the river and Benodet.

So here we are - having a coffee before visiting a chateau near to Roskoff. Will hopefully check in later.

Beach Days

Sorry there was no blog last night, but we were too knackered for a jaunt into the town.

Yesterday started with a quick stroll around the Sainte Marine market. Anne got herself caught under the spell of the Fromarge man - we walked away with €11.20's worth of cheese!! It was nice though!

The weather looked dull and grey even though the weather forecast had mentioned that it would be good on Wednesday and Thursday. We decided to walk to Il Tudy along the beach (2.6 miles in each direction).

Soon after setting off, it started to rain - the drizzley-type but we carried on. Then suddenly it happened! We were slowly paddling in the shore-line with the waves crashing over our feet and halfway up our calf muscles and the sun came out!

So there we were completely unprepared for the blazing sun - no hats, no sun cream and no knotted handkerchiefs!

We gently strolled along the beach dodging the fields of decaying seaweed and eventually got to Il Tudy where not a lot had changed since Anne and I visited the place with my parents a few years ago.

We found a delightful restaurant on the sea wall and tucked in to our meal whilst the local kids jumped off the harbour wall in to the sea shrieking with happiness in the process.

We started our return walk. The tide was out and the sun behind us. By the time we had got back to the cottage, we all had very distinctive tan-lines.

As the evening was still young we decided to make the most of the sunshine and return to the beach for a swim.

I opened the blue shutters in the lounge this morning and the sky was a richer blue than the shutters! It seems ages since I last drew back the curtains to reveal the same.

Today was the promised beach day (for Nia). However as we sat in the garden and the sun revealed itself to us in the garden, the heat was excessive and we decided that a whole day on the beach would be too much. So after a quiet morning reading our books, in the shade - we kitted up and left for the beach.

Anne and I were the first in - we braved the cold and swam off to mingle with the youngsters on the pontoon anchored  off shore. No soon as I swam all the way back with Anne, I had to repeat the task with Nia. However, this time Nia and I mucked about on the pontoon - jumping/ diving off only to climb back on and do the same! What fun!!

So now we have just finished our meal at the Pizzeria Du Port, in the harbour.

Tut - the oldies of today!

I carefully opened the shutters this morning, hoping to see the orangey-yellow globe in the sky surrounded by a field of blue. But alas, the only blue was from the shutters themselves and the orangey-yellow globe - a distant memory from last week.

The sky was grey! But not raining - sort of positive. We opted for a bike ride today - Pointe de Trévignon was the first port of call - a delightful little fishing village

We then rode through Pont Aven (we planned to return) to Bélon in order to visit a delightful fish restaurant called Chéz Jacky.

Unfortunately the kitchen was closed by the time we got there so they could only offer cold food. Anne and Nia had smoked salmon and I had terrine au crustacean. Nice but pricey

Back on the bikes we returned to Pont Aven. Pont Aven is a delightful small town with a river where the sea-going vessels moor. The town hosts numerous art galleries. We saw one picture that took our fancy. The artist came over as she saw out interest and her words were, "this one is original - it is cheap" it was €1800!

Now then - to the title of the post.

We stopped for a coffee and found a table. The table to our left had just been vacated by the previous occupants. An elderly couple sat at this table. On seeing the small circular tray with the previous occupant's bill and payment, the man proceeded to look at the cost, counted the money present and then astonishingly, he took off the tip and pocketed it himself!!!! I looked over to Anne and asked if what I saw actually happened!

We had parked the bikes opposite a gallery, near to the dockside. As we parked up, they drew a lot of attention and when we returned to them, they still had people admiring them. One chap had a picture of a motorbike on his chest, he clocked Anne, Nia and I and prompted to tell us of his bike collection.

By this time it had started to rain so we decided to ride back to Sainte Marine as quick as possible. We donned our waterproof tops but not the leggings. We got wet!!

We didn't get to the harbour last night thus no blog. We had spent the day dodging showers in Benodet and in the evening we went for a wander to the beach.

Quiet day

The rain poured and the thunder clapped - but we didn't have to get up! After 9 days of riding we suddenly did't have a ride planned for today!

It didn't take too long before boredom set it. Anne entertained herself with putting washing onto the line only to bring it back in again when it rained. Then to re-peg it outside when the rain stopped - only to run out and get it again etc etc etc.

The weather eventually cleared for long enough for the 3 of us to explore Sainte Marine.

We came across a park where there was a stall where a number of folk were making crêpes - savoury and sweet and selling them with thé and café. Anne and I had the café but Nia had a crêpe au chocolat.

Once through the park, we followed the River Odet out of it's estuary and into the Atlantic. The calmness of the estuary suddenly became a rough sea with tall waves crashing on to the rocks with the help of the strong winds coming off the sea. The pontoon was being battered all over the place with the power of the sea and 2 boats were nearly vertical at times. One boat had been turned upside down!

Walking on the beach was like being sand-blasted by the sand that was being lifted and carried in the winds

So tomorrow, it will possibly be a ride out to Pont Aven or a walk to Il Tudy along the beach - depending on the weather.
